concealed/revealed
Charcoal drawings by Minnesota-based
artist Emily Isenberg
July 9–August 27, 2009

Isenberg’s life-size charcoal drawings explore the complex structure of the human body. Inspired by the figurative works of Alfred Leslie, Richard Diebenkorn, and Alice Neal, Isenberg uses expressive, bold and gestural mark making to energize her figures. There is a definite liveliness to the work, defining the tenuous relationship between spirit and substance.

“The body is the source of our deepest pleasures and traumas,” states Isenberg. “By revealing the concealed anatomy beneath the clothing and skin, exposing the complex layers of our bodies, bone, muscle, organs, veins, and spirit, we come to realize that we are the same underneath. Yet our stories and experiences, similarly complex, are still hidden.”

Isenberg is drawn to the mechanics, elegance, and character of her subjects, looking to express its physical presence through exposing the intricacy of the human form. Each drawing accurately reveals specific anatomical details while abstracting and concealing others.
