13- a grown-up story about growing up!
(entering grades 7–12)

Music and Lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, Book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn

A FULLY STAGED PRODUCTION!
June 28–July 30, 2010 (No camp July 2)

12-year old New Yorker Evan Goldman is surrounded by Rabbis. After chanting to him, one of them explains that when a boy has his Bar Mitzvah, he becomes an adult. As the Rabbis reveal that they're actually other New York kids, Evan tells the audience about how stressful turning 13 is—especially since his parents are getting divorced and he's under pressure to have the best Bar Mitzvah imaginable. Just as Evan thinks maybe things will be fine, his mother calls to tell him they're moving to Indiana. Making new friends and surviving the school year is going to be easier said than done… With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, 13 is a hilarious, high-energy musical for all ages about discovering that “cool” is where you find it, and sometimes where you least expect it.

This intensive 5-week program will teach the fundamentals of theater, music, and dance—all in the process of creating a fully-staged production of the recent Broadway hit, 13! All participants get the opportunity to perform in the show and work with professional theater artists who will coach them in the development of their acting, singing, and dance skills. In addition to staging the show, participants will engage in daily theater and improv games that help them build confidence and create vibrant characters on stage, engage in workshops that provide a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes aspects of theater such as costume and set design, go swimming in the JCC's outdoor pool, and make meaningful friendships through the theater ensemble they'll build! This innovative and unique summer experience provides youth with excellent theater arts training that promotes personal and artistic growth, and is a great choice for both experienced and novice performers who are committed to improving their skills and eager to learn about the theatrical process!
