Yoga with a Jewish Soul

This spiritual class will give you a yoga experience with Jewish Content and Spiritual expression.  We will explore basic yoga poses, pranayama (breath work), Hebrew Chanting, and soul stimulating music.  Come prepared for movement, relaxation and socialization.   This class is for students who would like to try yoga for the first time to experienced students.

Jewish Mysticism

Mysticism is a term that many use, but few truly understand. This course will introduce you to the mysteries of Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah Through a close reading the central texts of Jewish mysticism, such as the Heikhalot texts, the Bahir, the Zohar, and much more, course participants will engage in discussion related to the mystical phenomena of Judaism and such topics as prophecy and visionary activity, mystical approaches to secret knowledge, traditions of heavenly ascent, the origins of evil, erotic dimensions in Kabbalah and the diffusion of Kabbalah in popular American culture.

From Mogadishu to Minnesota: Somali/American/Jewish Encounters

Come and learn about Somali culture, the largest Diaspora community outside ofMogadishuin its Twin Cities' home and its diverse preexisting history with Jews and Israelis. Instructor: Dr. Nancy Hartevelt Kobrin.  Dr. Kobrin is a psychoanalyst, Arabist and counter terrorist expert who developed an interest in Somali culture after being invited to teach the Sheriff’s deputies of HennepinCountyin 2005.

Israel in the Middle East

The course centers around one major question: can Israel be accommodated in the Middle East, from the viewpoints of both Israelis and surrounding Arab and Muslim populations?   Discussing this question will involve the following topics: Israelis’ visions of Israel and the Middle East; “Jewish” and “Democratic” Israel: Conjunction or Schism?; Arab and Muslim views of Israel; Israel and its Arab minority between Integration and Alienation, and Jerusalem as the Bone of Contention between Jewish Israelis and Muslim Arabs.

Raising Jewish Kids who Care\

In a consumer culture filled with materialism and entitlement, it can be a challenge for children to see a connection between themselves and the greater community. Join us as we discuss how to nurture thoughtfulness, caring, and compassion in our children. Together we will explore how to incorporate ethical values into our parenting, and how to teach our children about the importance of giving and tikkun olam. This class is appropriate for parents or grandparents of preschool & elementary school students and will be taught in two sections.  Sign up for one or both, you do not need to attend one to benefit from the other.

Hebrew Word Power for Rusty Learners

From our early days in Hebrew School to synagogue services to visits to Israel, we have picked up a few words here and there. Here is a class that will continue to increase your Hebrew word power through easy to read Hebrew Stories, newspaper articles and exercises. If you are a little rusty and want to get on the path to a stronger grasp of daily Hebrew, then this class is for you! Instructor: Uri Koppel.

Israeli Dancing For All

Discover Israeli culture and learn folk dancing from a pro featuring contemporary Israeli dances, classics and old favorites. The session is open to enthusiastic dancers of all ages. The first half hour is geared towards teaching basic steps and easy dances and the second half of the class focuses on requests, open dancing, and teaching of more advanced dances. Class meets 7:00 - 8:00. Instructor: Steve Mintz.

Postville, IOWA: The Book and the Reality

Join this thought provoking class that will delve into the city of Postville, Iowa, home of one of the largest Kosher Meat Packing Plants in America. The class will read sections of the book by Stephen Bloom, learn about how this story has unfolded, and what is happening in Postville today. Instructor: Rabbi Alexander Davis.

Yiddish: Keeping it Alive with a Creative Twist

Join this conversational Yiddish Class, learning some new creative phrases, and on the last night, find your way to Cecil’s Deli with directions in Yiddish! Instructor: Sol Awend.

Rabbi Simpser - Relationships

In this course you will gain valuable insights into your relationships, based on the wisdom of the Torah. The course will also teach practical techniques for fine-tuning your language in relationships, gaining greater clarity and understanding in discussions, increasing sales in your business, getting your children to cooperate and building a better rapport with others quickly and easily. Robert Alter is a professor in comparative literature and Biblical studies at the University of California at Berkeley. In the last 20 years, Alter has moved from literary studies to a program to capture the beautiful rhythms and literary nuances of the Bible through translations, articles and books include The Art of Biblical Poetry.
