The Amazing Human Body

Love robots and amazing machines? Wait until you learn about the human body! Join the Bell Museum of Natural History and examine the human eye and see how it can be tricked, collect our own cells and look at them under a microscope, and even dissect a pig to explore anatomy.

Hop, Skip, & Jump Into Textiles
(entering grades 4-6) |
Spend a whole week with a fabulous artist from the Textile Center. Use a sewing machine to make a tote bag. Weave a bracelet. Twist some cord for a bookmark. Make your own yarn. Turn wooly fluff into fabric. These are just a few of the fun projects we will do with fabric and fibers.

Science Detective

The formula for the secret magical slime has been stolen by Slithering House. You have to go undercover and become a spy to recover the secret formula. You will create disguises, secret codes, spy tools and more in this Science Explorers camp of spies, fantasies and fun.

Video Game Design
(entering grades 4-8) |
In this Computer Explorers camp, campers will learn how to design, create and edit their own arcade-style video game. Every participant will have full control of the characters, game objectives, outcomes and difficulty. Each game will be put on a CD for the students to take home or challenge a friend to the game they just created. You will also receive a copy of the video game design software to continue your creations!

Digging Up The Past

Creepy Crawlers
(entering grades 3-6) |
Are you ready to get your hands dirty? And grubby. And slimy. This is a week dedicated to worms, grasshoppers, leeches, beetles, fireflies, ants, and other creepy-crawly creatures. We will build and use bug traps, sweep nets, worm farms, and make beeswax candles. We will start our own insect collection and do a biological inventory of all the insect species that can be found on the new Bell Museum grounds and University of Minnesota campus.

Puppets Take The Stage
(entering grades 3-6) |
Each camper will create a character through writing and then make it three-dimensional by crafting it into a hand puppet. Then, campers will write a short piece for their puppet to perform for an invited audience on the final day. Campers will learn the basic craft of puppet making, puppet manipulation and fundamentals of writing for stage characters, such as monologue, dialogue, plot and action. Each camper will have a puppet to take home at the end of the week.

Carnival of the Animals

Campers will have fun creating art projects that coincide with music and dance. We will use our imaginations to create movements to the music of the Carnival of the Animals, composed by Camille Saint-Saens, and then experiment with making the art pieces using a variety of media.

Forensic Science

Imagine being called in the middle of the night by the police. There has been a crime and they need your help to solve the case. There are clues left by animals and plants at the scene that only you and a few others can figure out. If you do your job right, a criminal is caught and the crime is solved. In this camp with the Bell Museum of Natural History, you will meet people who use their knowledge of animals and plants to help the police solve crimes. You will learn to identify insects, measure footprints, and examine bones. At the end of the week you will have a mock crime mystery to solve.

Super Science Sampler

Be a science explorer as you discover four different science topics with Science Explorers. Learn about rocketry as you design and fly balloon rockets. Become a student doctor as you learn about basic first aid and create a life size model of your insides. Have a shocking good time as you create circuits and build your own electromagnet. Then step into the crazy chemist lab as you mix up a batch of bouncing plastic and more to take home.

Carnivals and Amusement Parks

Join the Computer Explorers and the kids from the PBS KIDS show Cyberchase™ in an exciting computer adventure where you help solve a variety of incredible logic puzzles by playing Bumper Cars, Skeet Ball, Busting Balloons and more! Then, design and build your own virtual amusement park! Choose the rides, shops and layout to create a park for you and your friends to enjoy. Finally, you will have to manage your park to make sure the customers are happy…which is not always so easy!

The Music of Art

Participants will learn how to be effective volunteers, how to organize volunteer projects, and will volunteer at local institutions. To thank you for all your hard work, Friday will be Valley Fair day!

Camp Hollywood

Flight Academy

Have you ever wondered how a 350-ton jumbo jet gets off the ground? As a flight cadet in training, you will discover how airplanes fly. Master the forces of nature as we experiment with different methods of flight. Test your airplane’s performance in a wind tunnel. See how different wing shapes generate lift with a lift tester. Build your own model rocket; ride the air on a Hovercraft; test your flight skills as you pilot a blimp. Learning has never been this much fun!
