COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE @ THE SABES JCC

Get fresh produce...produce a healthier community.

Sign up to get a box of fresh, seasonal vegetables every week this summer while supporting local sustainable farming.

How does it work?
Sign up by March 20, 2011 for either a half (feeds about 2 people) or full (feeds family of 4 or more) share of fresh seasonal vegetables from Easy Bean Farm.  By committing early and paying in advance you will help support Easy Bean Farm’s season start-up costs, which are usually significant for any small farm.  In return you’ll receive a box of fresh vegetables each Friday (just in time for Shabbat) from June to October 2011 (average season is 17 weeks).  Pick up will be at the Sabes JCC on Fridays from 9 am 5:30 pm, the specific room and process for pick up will be communicated to CSA members closer to the beginning of the season. There are a limited number of shares available, so sign up soon!

"The quality of the produce is outstanding -- everything is sweeter and crunchier because it was literally picked within the last 24 hours -- and it was a joy to watch my kids eat cherry tomatoes by the handful and pull carrots right out of the box at pick up and start munching away." – Erica Strohl, JCC and CSA member.

What do you get?
The box usually contains 10-15 different kinds of vegetables: basics like tomatoes, peppers, beans, carrots and squash, plus herbs, heirlooms and a few unusual varieties. Shareholders receive a newsletter each week filled with information about the veggies in their share, recipes, news from the farm and notices of upcoming events.  To buy this kind of quality each week would easily be more expensive than your share cost, and the attention to detail Easy Bean puts into its farming adds a personal touch you can’t find at the grocery store.

It is important to understand that being a member of the CSA involves sharing the rewards and risks (e.g. poor weather, early winter, etc.). Our Farm will do its best to provide a wide variety of fresh, chemical-free produce weekly. As in all farming, some crop failure can occur, and while this rarely affects the boxes, there will always be a certain risk. Please understand that your share may vary from week to week and that there is no guarantee as to the size or contents of your share. The shares will vary in weight and size depending on the time of season. Put simply, as a shareholder in the farm you share in both the bounty and the lean times.

You’ll most likely receive some vegetables with which you are unfamiliar, but eating foods in season is a wonderful learning experience.  The Sabes JCC will provide recipes and tips for new and exciting vegetables as well as updates on programs like Cooking Classes and educational opportunities with local food scholars!

How much does it cost?
You can reserve your share today with a $50 deposit.  Deposits are non-refundable. The remainder of the fee is due March 20.  Half shares are $405 and full shares are $525.  $15 of that fee goes to the JCC to cover overhead costs, the rest goes directly to the farmer. While it may seem like a large amount up front, many think of their involvement with a CSA as an investment.  Your “share” works out to about $30 a week, and a half share only $23!  When factoring in the health costs of processed, out of season food, this is a bargain compared to what this would cost if purchased from a store each week!

The Sabes JCC is committed to making this opportunity available to the widest number of people in the community as possible. Please contact if the cost presents a barrier to participation or if you’d like to donate additional amounts (Any amount helps, whether it be $5, $25 or $75.)

Additional donations are encouraged to make this program available to those for whom the cost presents a barrier to participation.  Make sure to indicate this on the registration form or online (click “add ons”).
