AnatSzendroRightbeforecomingtoMinneapolismysweetveyearoldnieceaskedmeWhatdoeslonginglooklikemyrstinstinctwastosayamessbutafterthinkingaboutitIhadtoldherthateachpersonseesandfeelslongingdifferentlyandformeitfeelslikeaballoonfullofairinsidemytummy.Movingtoanewcountryhasbeenastressfulandwonderfulexperienceallatonce.Longingisalwayspresentshadowingmeforcingmetoredenemysacredspace.Ihavebuiltanamazinglifeherefoundfriendsandfamily.Butstillsomethingismissing.InmyartworkwhichincludesfourpostersIhavedecidedtoconfrontthesefeelingsbytryingtovisualizethem.DuringthelastyearIhavebeentakingscreenshotsofmySkypeconversationswithmyfamilyandfriends.Theseareverylow-resolutionpicturesthataremeanttobeseenonscreenonly.SinceIthinkandfeelincolorsIgaveeachoneofmyfamilymembersfriendsacoloredcirclethatrepresentshimherandplaceditonourconversationscreenshot.ByremovingthesepicturesandleavingonlythecoloredcirclesIhavecreatedgraphicsofconversationswithmyfamily.ThenbysubtractingthecirclesfrommyownSkypeimagesIvecreatedtheholesinmyworld.InatimeofadvancedtechnologyandnonprintedphotosdocumentingmySkypeconversationsistheonlyvisualevidanceofmyjourny.

SusanWeinbergMyworkintheexhibitionisbasedonthestoryofthebindingofIsaacbutinterpretedthroughamorecontemporarylensastoryfromafriendwhoisawitnesstotheShoah.Dorasstoryisofadeathmarchonwhichshewasaccompaniedbyhermother.AstheydepartedfromAuschwitztheyweregiventhreethingsablanketacanwithapictureofachickenandbread.Canssoonlitteredtheroadastheyhadnowaytoopenthem.Theblankethungasanoosearoundtheirneckrstononeshoulderthenthenext.Thebreadrepresentedlifeandtheyguardeditcarefully.Tositdownwastogetabulletinthebackofoneshead.AftertwodaysofwalkingDorawasexhausted.Sheconsideredsittingdownandwelcomingthebulletthatwouldendthetorment.HermotherunabletodissuadehersaidAllrightwellsitdowntogethertowhichDorarepliedNotyouInthatmomentsherealizedherlifewasboundtohermothersjustasIsaacswasboundtoAbrahams.Tosacriceonewastosacricetheother.HerstoryechoesmanyofthethemesaddressedinthebindingofIsaac.therelationshipofaparentandachildajourneyimpendingdeathasacriceaverted.Bothstorieshavesparsenesstothemthreeitemsthataccompanythemonajourneywithfewwords.Whenjuxtaposedthroughanaccompanyingpoemthetwostoriespresentdifferentviewsofsacriceandthebondbetweenaparentandchild.Mymediumistwofold.MyprimarymediumispaintingbutIalsosteppedoutsideofmyusualmediumtodescribeitthroughpoetry.Myprocessevolves.IstartwithastorybuttheimageryinmyheadcreatesadialoguewiththecanvasoftenarrivingatsurprisesthatIdidntanticipate.ThepoembeganwithaseriesofquestionstomyfriendDora.WhatwastheweatherlikeWheredidyousleepWhatdidyoufeelIbegantocraftthestoryfromherresponsesandthenreneditintoanalternatingandoftenparallelstructurebetweenIsaacandAbrahamandDoraandhermother.IwouldneverhavemadetheconnectionbetweenDorasstoryandthatofAbrahamandIsaachadwenotjustdiscusseditwithintheLab.ItwasgestatinginmymindreadytocometolifeasIbegantopaintherstoryaneffortthatoriginallyborenorelationshiptotheArtistLabproject.NorwouldIhavethoughttoventureintopoetrywereitnotforthetalentedpoetsandwriterswithintheLabwhoinspiredmetotryadifferentmedium.
