American Red Cross Swim Lessons
The Learn-to-Swim program teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach students to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water. The program is divided into seven course levels. The list below outlines skills that participants must successfully demonstrate in order to complete each level and move to the next. The daily schedule is listed to the right.
$65 - Members; $90 - Non-Members
Parent/Toddler: 6 months-36 months
Children practice basic aquatic skills while being accompanied by a parent. These skills include bubble blowing, kicking, and entering/exiting the water.
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills
Water adjustment class focusing on development of elementary aquatic skills. Students work in small groups with an instructor. Parents are not required to participate in the water. Goal is full-face immersion and breath control.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Designed to instruct children in fundamental swimming skills with an emphasis on water safety. Goal is independent floating and locomotion.
Level 3: Stroke Development
Builds on skills developed in Level 2. Students are tested on the first day of class and are grouped according to ability. The goal is for children to learn to swim front crawl, back crawl, and dolphin kick.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Emphasis is on the front/back crawl, elementary backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, diving and basic water safety skills. Treading water for one minute is required to complete this course. Goal is proper form in front crawl 25 yards, backstroke 25 yards, and elementary backstroke 15 yards.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement
Review of front crawl and elementary backstroke, followed by instruction on the sidestroke and breaststroke. Endurance is increased and new water safety skills are introduced. Flip turns are introduced. Goal is front and back crawl 50 yards, elementary backstroke 25 yards, breast and sidestroke 25 yards.
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency
This level requires much endurance. The goal is front crawl 100 yards, back crawl 100 yards, breaststroke 50 yards, elementary backstroke 50 yards, sidestroke 50 yards, butterfly 50 yards, and 100 yards of choice. Survival float, treading water, and diving are additional skills required in this level.
